Green Tea: The More the Better
50Why it's Hot
When it comes to "hot" beverages, green tea fits the bill as the beverage equivalent of a superfood. An emerging body of epidemiological (population) data and controlled animal studies offer evidence of the ability of this ubiquitous beverage (and supplement) to prevent or reduce the risk of several types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, dental caries, along with additonal benefits.
If there's one means of negating the benefits of green tea and possibly causing harm, it is to consume it (or any other beverage for that matter) at very high temperatures as recent evidence has corroborated earlier studies which implicate the consumption of hot liquids with higher rates of esophageal cancer. Notably, in the case of green tea in particular, the directions for preparation often state that it should be steeped in water that is below boiling temperature as this may result in a less bitter taste.
If there is one piece of information which may dampen the excitement about green tea, it's that a number of studies indicate that the benefits of drinking it aren't obtained until at least ten cups are consumed! This is probably the most compelling reason for one to consider taking it in supplement form.
